How The Renewed Mind Does Not Give Place to the Devil

Pastor Lonnie outlines the importance of how we hear, and what we hear, and how it influences our heart. Protecting our heart and our mind is crucial for out of it comes the issues of life. He gives keys to understanding how the devil works against our mind, to bring lies and corruption. Therefore, it is up to us to know how the devil works against us, so we can have the understanding and the tools to guard from his ways, so that we can protect our heart, and, as a result, that which comes out of our mouth will be from a place of a pure, renewed heart and mind. When we live in this place, for a renewed mind, we live more like Jesus and are able to represent Him properly to the world around us.

The Importance of How We Hear

Luke 8:17-18 (NKJV) For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

In verse 18, how we hear is vital. We can’t just hear spiritual things with our natural minds and expect to understand. This is why we need the spirit of God.

Matthew 15:11 (NKJV) “Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

It’s the words that come out of our mouths that defile us, but how did those words get in us in the first place? Read Luke 6:45:

Luke 6:45, 46 (NKJV) A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

So, now we know that the words that come out of us originate from the heart. Remember, “Lord” means boss. There’s a lot of things that are said that we have the opportunity to listen to, and these words that we subject ourselves to can end up in our heart. Things that we watch will also end up in our heart. So much of our day is made up of what man says. We need to make extra sure that the words of Jesus trump the things we hear from man. Here are two passages to consider:

Luke 6:47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

And again in Proverbs

Proverbs 4:20 (NKJV)My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes;
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them,
And health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.

Exposing the Enemy

In order to help us fully understand the importance of what goes into our heart,  we need to spend a bit of time exposing how the enemy works against our heart and mind.

John 8:43 (NKJV) Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

If the devil is speaking he’s lying because that’s his mother tongue. All he knows is deception and lies. The enemy’s entire tactic is to come at us against our mind, and slander us, and tell us lies. He wants to entrap us, entangle us, in his lies.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

We must not be ignorant of the methods (i.e. devices) that the devil uses against us, which is against our minds

2 Corinthians 2:10,11 (NKJV) Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

His target is our minds, and he uses the same, old method each and every time! He wants to put bad seed in you, so that your heart will be corrupt, and when you speak bad things will come out. If the devil can get his words in your mind, and therefore in your heart, he can get you to accuse others, especially those in the body of Christ. The devil does not have an audience before God, but we do. This is the sly way that the devil tries to get an audience before God, by using us against each other. If we get this, and understand the way he attacks us, then we can put a guard over our mind (helmet of salvation) and our heart. The devil’s method is to twist the truth and bring a lie. He wants us to believe lies about other people and feel vindicated when we attack others. Many times people will judge others as a way to elevate themselves.

The Renewed Mind Does Not Give Place to the Devil

Ephesians 6:10 (NKJV) Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

We as believers in Christ should not be looking at each other eye to eye, but rather shoulder to shoulder, looking in the same direction, and taking our marching orders from Jesus Christ. We will establish the Kingdom of God wherever we go when we are united in this, and get unified in the way we should be, and quit worrying about what someone else said, what someone else thinks, and whether someone agrees with you or not.

Ephesians 4:23 (NKJV) “…and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, putting away lying, Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

When the above verse mentions “the spirit of your mind”, it means the pure heart making your mind fruitful, and having that second mind, the mind of Christ. Being renewed in the spirit of your mind is the mind of Christ, and receiving the Word of God and the words of Jesus, and obeying them. Watch the full sermon now!
