Holy Spirit: Before and After the Cross | Friday Night Sermon

Holy Spirit: Before and After the Cross

Holy Spirit is absolutely vital to the life of the believer. It’s important to know who Holy Spirit is, and why He was sent, and what His purpose is. Jesus tells His disciples that it is expedient that He leave so that Holy Spirit can come. Holy Spirit, while the same, rested upon believers in the Old Testament, and now resides within believers after the cross. This sermon by Pastor Lonnie details several scriptures about Holy Spirit, to which he comments a bit on each one. The main thing is that you get uplifted and encouraged, and get the answers that you need through this message. To watch the full sermon, jump the end and check out the livestream video.

Holy Spirit – Helper

John 14:15 (NKJV) “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

There are two names mentioned of the Holy Spirit in the above verse: Helper and Spirit of Truth. Holy Spirit is available to all believers who have come into the Kingdom through the blood and the cross of Jesus Christ. Prior to the cross, in the Old Testament, Holy Spirit would rest on certain individuals, like King David, for example. The anointing of God rested upon Him to lead God’s people. When David sinned, however, lamented in Psalms 51:11, asking God to not take His Spirit from Him. David in Psalm 84:19, also says “..Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” The Spirit of God loves to reveal things about Jesus and He dwells, he makes habitation, he tabernacles, in us. He used to dwell on the Arc of the Covenant, between the cherubim, but now we are the Arc of the Covenant, and Holy Spirit dwells in us, and we take Him wherever we go.

Holy Spirit – Reveals Truth

John 14:26 (NKJV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:7, 12-15 (NKJV) “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you…...12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

The only way Holy Spirit was going to come was if Jesus went away, to the cross to die and rise again and ascend into Heaven. Holy Spirit, then, we He came, would be the One to guide us into all truth. Also, like Jesus, Holy Spirit only speaks what He hears the Father say and therefore does not speak on His own authority. Holy Spirit also knows what lies ahead. In the heavenlies, God sees it all. He’s not bound by time and space. He knows your yesterdays, todays and tomorrows. If you want to follow someone who is going to help and guide you right, you need to listen to the One who knows what’s ahead. The glory of anything is the full manifestation of its purpose. Holy Spirit takes all things that are Jesus and He magnifies and manifests them in planet earth, and in us, and to us, for all to know and see.

Holy Spirit – Family

Romans 8:14 -17 (NKJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Everything is God’s, and because we are joint heirs in Christ, it’s all ours too. Do not suffer any longer. God bankrupt heaven to send His son Jesus to us. Do not neglect such a great, and perfect salvation.

1 John 3 (NKJV) Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Have God faith. In the faith realm, we have to understand that it all happened 2000+ years ago when Jesus hung on the cross and he paid in full. God did that for us because we family now – we are sons and daughters of the Most High King, we are royalty.

Acts 1:8 (NKJV) “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

When Holy Spirit comes upon us, we receive power, and we become preachers to those in…Sacramento [insert your city here], and the outline counties, then the state, then the world.

1 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NKJV)  Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

God created free men and women, not slaves. It’s good to walk in liberty, to live in freedom to be manifested from glory to glory, by the Spirit of God.

Luke 4:18 (NKJV)

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
